The book that I made Thursday turned out really well. I used gorilla glue to bind the spine and it's holding really solidly, but I'm slightly worried that if I open the book too widely that it might crack. I think that next time I make a book I'll experiment with a different glue.
I've bought the canvases to make my paintings. I got three, to make a triad. The exact contents of the paintings I'm still working out, but my roommate and I have come up with a few ideas that we like and are discussing. We are going to decide on an idea tomorrow and then start painting. I'll post up pictures of progress as soon as each painting is started and the finished progress.

my activites today
I got all of the materials for book making, and made my book, using the sewing method. I'm just waiting for the glue to dry, which won't be until tomorrow, but I think it will turn out alright.
As for the main project, I took time today to go through my proposals and decide which would really be the best one for my problem. I think that making something myself would be the easiest and best way to make my space feel more personal, and having my roommate and I make something together would create an object that is even more one of a kind. Therefore, I think that I am going to have my roommate and I make a small series of paintings to put around the apartment to both make the space more interesting and add a personal touch. I am going to talk to my roommate tonight about how many paintings we want to do and what we want the theme to be. Tomorrow I will go get supplies and start the project!

my progress today...
Today I took pictures to add to my book, which I am planning on making on Thursday, and also to document part of my problem and help solidify which of my proposals would be best to choose for my final solution.
I lived in a house last year and this year I live in an apartment, so the amount of storage space that I have has shrunk. My roommate and I are still trying to adjust and we still have a few odds and ends in boxes because there is currently no space for them. Some examples are my light collapsed into its box and some pots and pans still in a moving box because we ran out of space in the kitchen cupboards.
I'm not entirely sure how these problems can be solved, besides these solutions:
1. get rid of / donate things until everything fits somewhere
2. store the least used items somewhere else
3. come up with some way to store the excess items in the apartment, however this is difficult, considering the lack of space in my apartment to begin with

design proposal
problem:
My space feels more neutral than personal, lacks an individual touch, and seems very temporary.
solution 1:
All of the furniture in the living room of my apartment, which is the main area where my roommate and I spend most of our time, is a disaster to look at. We each brought our own couches, one a navy love seat, the other a sectional with seventies floral pattern, crammed into the space with the coffee table and nonmatching tv-stand. I think that taking the time to improve this space would improve both both of our moods and well being while being in the space.
solution 2:
People are more attached to something that they make themselves, as opposed to something that they purchase in a store, therefore, I think it might be nice to have my roommate and I both contribute to making something. Both of us making a painting or other such piece to hang up on our wall would feel gratifying and make the space more individualized.
solution 3:
For this solution, I would like to make a memory or keepsake board to preserve pictures and other items I have that are currently just sitting in a box in my closet. To make this, I would need a wooden board as a backing, with an edge. Then I would place the pictures and other items on the board and glue them into place. After the glue is dry, you would put clear resin coating over the top to make a smooth top layer protecting the objects. Then, after it's done, I could hang it on the wall.
This is usually done with table tops, here is an example of the outcome:

For the diy project, I baked a blueberry coffeecake.
For the cake:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup sour cream
2 cups blueberries
2 cups unbleached white flour
For the topping:
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
1. preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. cream butter and sugar
3. add eggs, baking powder, salt, and baking soda
4. alternating, add flour and sour cream
5. fold in blueberries
6. pour into well-buttered cake pan ( 9x13)
7. topping: cream brown sugar and butter, add flour, apread on top of the batter
8. bake for 30 minutes (I actually had to bake for 55) - topping should melt and partially sink into the batter
... and enjoy!
